Risk Evaluations for an Active Chemical Storage Facility

SRS staff are the primary risk assessors for a bulk chemical facility in Pennsylvania.  The facility has had many historic releases of various types of chemicals over time.  The facility is approximately 30 acres in size and presents a unique challenge on how data is managed to assess potential chemical exposure from these releases.  A comprehensive conceptual site model was developed to allow for the partitioning of data into quadrants in order to create realistic exposure scenarios to prevent underestimation of risks and hazards to potential “hot spot” areas.  This type of approach limited the areas where institutional/engineering controls needed to be implemented on the property and still complies with state regulatory requirements.  Subsequent releases have occurred at the site resulting in the need for additional risk evaluations.  This project is ongoing.
